Effective Solutions for Every Project
Hydroseed and Hydromulching
Hydroseeding and Hydromulching are two of the most effective and widely used methods for establishing vegetation, controlling erosion and stabilizing soil on construction and development sites.
These processes provide a fast, economical and environmentally friendly solution to soil stabilization, revegetation and dust control
DURABLE GROUND PROTECTION

Title
Protect your site and strengthen your project with our specialist geofabric and coir matting solutions for effective erosion control. These solutions provide versatile, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible options for erosion control, helping to stabilise soil, manage water flow, and deliver long-term performance across a wide range of construction and development projects.
What is Hydroseeding?
Hydroseeding is a process that involves spraying a slurry mixture of grass seed, water, mulch, and fertilizers directly onto the soil. The mixture is applied using specialized hydroseeding equipment, which ensures even and quick coverage of large areas. The water in the slurry helps the weeds adhere to the soil, providing the perfect environment for germination and growth.
- Hydroseeding can be done on any ground surface where vegetation will grow, providing a great system for stabilizing bare areas without the need to prepare the soil as with conventional grassing methods. There are also many different types of additives that can be used to alter the characteristics of the hydroseed mix.
At Erosion Control Co Limited we always tailor mix our hydroseed to best suit the specific job, client requirements and climatic conditions.
Optimum times for commercial hydroseeding are through Spring and Autumn where a combination of warmth and moisture result in rapid grass establishment. During the colder months we can introduce winter active seed species and hrdroseeding. In summer hydroseeding achieves outstanding results when combined with irrigation.
What is Hydromulching?
Hydromulching is an advanced form of hydroseeding that delivers superior erosion control and faster, more reliable grass establishment across New Zealand landscapes. Using a thicker, more fibrous mulch combined with specialised tackifiers and beneficial soil microbes, hydromulch forms a protective blanket over exposed soil. This layer helps retain moisture, reduce erosion, and protect seeds from harsh weather such as heavy rain and strong winds, giving vegetation the best possible conditions to establish quickly and evenly. Common hydromulch products include Hydrohay and Flexterra, both designed for high-performance ground cover.
At Erosion Control, we provide professional hydromulching services for residential, commercial, and large-scale developments throughout New Zealand. Whether you’re restoring vegetation on steep slopes, stabilising construction sites, or protecting newly cleared land, our experienced team uses innovative technology to deliver effective soil stabilisation and long-lasting results in a fast, sustainable manner.
Tailored Hydroseed Mixes
We understand that each site has unique characteristics, so our team formulates hydroseeding blends suited to your soil type, climate, and project goals. We include optimal grass seed varieties, fertilisers, and mulch to promote rapid germination and long-lasting plant growth. This approach can be particularly beneficial for native hydroseeding, helping restore local flora and support biodiversity.
Erosion Control hydroseeding and hydromulching services provide an efficient and versatile solution for establishing grass on construction sites, steep slopes, hard-to-access areas, or any location where traditional sowing is difficult. Using tailored combinations of seed, mulch, and tackifiers, we create solutions suited to site conditions and project goals.
We offer a range of specialised Hydro mulchblends:
- Liquid Soil
Designed for poor or degraded soils, improving fertility and providing a growing medium for grass to establish - HydroHay
Ideal for soil surface stabilistion, protecting bare ground from erosion while encouraging vegetation growth. - Flexterra
Consists of thermally refined wood fibers, crimped interlocking biodegrable fibers, and performance-enhancing additives (tackifiers) that bond directly to the soil.
When to use Hydroseeding and Hydromulching
Slopes and Slip Repair:
Stabilizing areas prone to washouts, landslips, or steep inclines.
Roadside Embankments:
Encouraging quick vegetation growth for safety and reduced dust in road construction projects.
Sports Fields and Parks:
Creating a durable grass surface capable of withstanding heavy use.
Commercial Developments:
Providing visually appealing green spaces that enhance property value.
Mine Site Reclamation:
Re-establishing plant life in previously disturbed landscapes.
How Hydroseeding and Hydromulching work
1. Soil Preparation (optional)
The site is cleared of debris, and the soil is loosened to create an ideal seedbed.
Note: Hydromulch can be sprayed on any surface that will grow grass however better prep will normally result in a better, more even grass cover.
2. Slurry Mixing
A Mixture of seeds, mulch, water and fertilizers is combined in a hydroseeding tank. For hydromulching, additional materials like fibre mulch or tackifiers are added to create a thicker slurry.
3. Application
The mixture is sprayed evenly across the designated area using specialized hydroseeding or hydromulching equipment. This ensures complete and uniform coverage.
4. Germination
The slurry provides an ideal environment for seeds to germinate. The mulch protects the seeds and keeps the soil moist, allowing grass or vegetation to grow quickly and effectively.
6. Site stabilization
Once vegetation has grown, it helps stabilize the soil, reduce erosion, and improve the overall aesthetics of the site.
7. Ongoing Maintenance (optional)
We provide advice on watering schedules and weed management. Regular monitoring keeps the grass cover robust and supports the growth of any additional vegetation, including native species.
Benefits of Hydroseeding and Hydromulching
Flexible Application
Hydroseeding and Hydromulching can be used on a wide range of terrians, including flat areas, steep slopes and uneven surfaces. This versatility makes them ideal for many types of development sites, from large open spaces to difficult-to-reach areas like hillsides or roadside embankments, lawns and parks.
Fast and Efficient Appication
Hydrosseding and Hydromuching allow for rapid application of seed and mulch over large areas that are difficult to mechanically see. This efficiency is particularly beneficial for construction sites and large development projects where time is critical.
No Preparation is required.
Machinery access onto the actual site is not requied as the product can be pumped a short distance.
Promotes Healthy vegetation growth
The slurry mixture used in hydroseeding and hydromulching contains essential nutrients that help seeds germinate and grow rapidly. By providing the perfect environment for growth these methods promote healthy, uniform vegetation that establishes quickly and stabilizes the soil.
Moisture Retention and Soil Stabilisation
The mulch used in hydroseeding helps retain moisture in the soil, which is essential for dust control and seed germination. Moist, compacted soil produces less dust, while the protective mulch layer prevents seeds from drying out. As vegetation establishes, it further strengthens soil structure and reduces erosion risk.
Environmentally Friendly
Hydroseeding is an eco-friendly dust control method that supports natural plant growth, improves soil health, and enhances biodiversity. The use of organic materials such as mulch and fertilisers enriches the soil, while established vegetation helps prevent erosion and supports local ecosystems.
